A new children’s book about tap dance great “Peg Leg” Bates has been published by Lee & Low Books. The book, titled “Knockin’ On Wood” by writer and artist Lynne Barasch, follows Bates’ life “from his days as a child…where he would dance on the streets…for spare change, to the day when, at age 12, he lost part of his left leg in an accident at a cottonseed mill…. From there, it follows Bates’ career from his early days performing in blackface at vaudeville shows to his rise to fame…”
