CID circular message

Dance Day preparations

On the 29th of April, as every year since 1982, World Dance Day will be celebrated all over the world by the international community of dancers and dance enthusiasts.
The International Dance Council CID has prepared the following guidelines as a useful checklist for persons institutionally involved in the wider field of dance: teachers, choreographers, group leaders, journalists, researchers, associations, suppliers, organizations etc.

Object
The main purpose of Dance Day events is to attract the attention of the wider public to the art of dance. Special emphasis should be given to addressing a “new” public, people who do not follow dance events during the course of the year.

Events
Dance Day events may be special performances, open-door courses, public rehearsals, lectures, exhibitions, articles in newspapers and magazines, dance evenings, radio and TV programs, visits, street shows etc.

Organizers
Events are primarily organized by dance companies, amateur groups, schools, associations and other institutions active in dance. Wherever possible, it is better for events to be organized jointly with a non-dance institution such as a government agency, a public school, a municipality, a business enterprise, a trade union.

Content
Organizers have full freedom to define the content of the event.
Make sure that you include general information on the art of dance, its history, its importance to society, its universal character. This can be done in a short speech, a note in the program, a text distributed to those present. By adding this dimension you make the event different from dance activities taking place any other day.
Read a message from a prominent personality, a poem, a passage from a text by a famous author.

Coordination
In order to achieve maximum success, it is important that preparations start early enough.
It is imperative to inform the press and generally the media about your event.
Notify an organization holding a central position at regional or national level, which should publish a list of events planned for Dance Day.
Entrance to events should preferably be free, or by invitation. Invite persons who do not normally attend dance events.

Location
At best, events should take place in “new” places, such as streets, parks, squares, shops, factories, villages, discotheques, schools, stadiums etc.
By setting the event in original surroundings you stress the fact that this is an event dedicated to the universal family of dancers.

Prof. Alkis Raftis
President of the CID

To all,
After this week, I will not be teaching at Broadway Dance Center on Fridays and Saturdays. I will still be teaching Hip-hop (Tuesdays: 7:30-9pm) and House (Thursdays 7:30-9pm).

Most of you know that I started teaching an Advanced Wacking class ( by request) on Wednesday from 6-8pm at Times Circle Studios (Fazil’s) 743 8th Ave. 2nd floor.

Well, because many of you want it (but I need to take Fridays off to take care of personal things; starting Saturday March 24, I will be teaching from 4-7pm at Fazil’s. 4-5:30pm House (TRUE basics) and 5:30-7pm Wacking (TRUE Basics). I say TRUE Basics, because, many of you know, I was a little to much at BDC (lol). Here, I can slow it down, by seperating the classes. For more information just email me here: brifoot71@yahoo.com

GOD BLESS ALL and KEEP DANCING,

Cook & Brown – Short bio:

Ernest Brown and Charles Cook were both born in 1917. By age five, Cookie was working with Sarah Venable in an act called Mammy and Her Picks. The ‘Picks’, who could really sing and dance, often opened for a show’s headline act. When one of the team left the show, Venable hired Ernest ‘Brownie’ Brown on Cookie’s recommendation. The two youngsters later performed in the act Garbage and His Two Cans (they were the cans).

In 1930, Cook & Brown formed a team that blended tumbling and acrobatics with dancing and comedy. They performed first at the College Inn in Chicago. Cook, who became known for his Russian floor dancing, was the tall, grouchy foil to the smaller, more spirited Brown. Their frantic, knock-about style – developed through study of circus tumblers and vaudeville comedians – was unmatched.

Arriving in Harlem in the early 1930′s, the team was an immediate success, appearing in the Cotton Club revue, Get Lucky, and becoming regulars at the Apollo Theatre. During their over 45 year partnership they headlined at the New York Roxy, Radio City Music Hall, London’s Palladium, the Latin Casino in Paris and more. Both performed the ‘specialty dance’, Too Darn Hot in the 1948 production of Cole Porter’s ‘Kiss Me Kate’.

Cook & Brown were among the founding members of the original Copasetics, an elite tap company that was formed in memory of Bill ‘Bojangles’ Robinson. They appeared with Dick Cavett on national television, with Maurice & Gregory Hines in the film The Cotton Club, as well as in three documentaries: Brenda Bufalino’s Great Feats of Feet, Susan Goldbetter’s Cookie’s Scrapbook and Jane Goldberg’s By Word of Foot.

Charles Cook died in August 1991 but not before sharing an incredible tap legacy with hundreds of tap enthusiasts, young and old. He taught regularly at Clark Center in NYC and was a guest at Yale, Howard, the Smithsonian, Lincoln Center, and the tap festivals of the 1970′s and ’80′s. For nearly 15 years he worked steadily with dance partner, Jane Goldberg. In the last decade of his life he collaborated with his former student, Susan Goldbetter by then his producer and manager, on a series of projects including the award winning video Essentials of Tap Technique and the slide montage, Cookie’s Harlem – which upon his passing became the impetus for Goldbetter’s multi-media Jazz exhibit: Cookie’s Harlem, A Tap Dancer’s World.

Ernest Brown (90) received the Hoofers Awards from the St. Louis and the NYC Tap Festivals, the Flo-Bert Award from the NY Committee to Celebrate National Tap Dance Day, and the Living Treasure Award from the Oklahoma City University. He is active in performing, teaching and lecturing with his current partner Reggio ‘The Hoofer’ McLaughlin, and recently appeared on the tap documentary ‘JUBA – Masters of Tap’.
