Chicago Tap Theatre proudly presents Tidings of Tap, an inclusive, multicultural dance celebration of Christmas, Chanukah and all things wintry. Tidings of Tap features seasonal standards and lesser-known songs as well as the spectacular dancing of Chicago Tap Theatre, the city’s most innovative tap ensemble. CTT’s popular family show includes perennial audience favorites like the holiday “Name That Tune” segment and the company’s most-requested number, “Carol of the Bells A Capella.” The company also presents brand new numbers, a naughty elf and a short, heartwarming story sure to resonate with both parents and children. “This show is our special winter gift to audiences of all ages, backgrounds and beliefs,” says Artistic Director Mark Yonally. “We’re all about fun, family and friends.” With CTT, theatre-goers can count on humor, excitement and maybe even a klezmer surprise!Tidings of Tap continues Chicago Tap Theatre’s tradition of celebrating the unexpected. For example, Tidings of Tap offers several pieces aimed at Jewish audience members, something that few holiday programs do. “I always feel bad for kids who are inundated year after year with Christmas shows, even if they don’t celebrate Christmas,” says Yonally. “This is our chance to offer something that will resonate with everyone, regardless of religion.” The company also sets a daring new standard with its choice of music. “Most performances only show the happy aspects of the holidays,” says Yonally, “but in my experience, a lot of people don’t perceive December that way. In fact, the holidays are often a time of contemplation.” CTT embraces the more reflective side of the season with two special pieces — a quiet, gentle interpretation of Joni Mitchell’s classic “River” and a subtle solo set to an instrumental version of “Christmastime is Here” from the Peanuts television special. Other numbers include a stunning version of “We Three Kings” by jazz musician Rahsaan Roland Kirk and a fiery “Ocho Kandelikas” performed by Chicago-based Maxwell Street Klezmer Band.
Chicago Tap Theatre has broken the boundaries of traditional tap dance for the last five years and now hopes to do the same with holiday entertainment. “Traditions are important,” said Yonally, “but audiences also want something fresh and innovative. That extends to holiday viewing as well. With this show, we hope to delight, enlighten and entertain audiences from a variety of backgrounds and celebrate all of their holidays through dance.” Tidings of Tap runs December 15 to 17 at the University of Illinois Chicago Theater (U.I.C. Theater 1044 W. Harrison), which is easily accessible by car (via route 290) or public transportation. Performances on the 15th and 16th are at 8 P.M. and also feature the I.D.T. dance company from Hope College. The December 17th show is at 3 P.M. and features Footprints Tap Ensemble, one of the most renowned youth tap companies in the nation. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and $15 for students and dancers. For information or ticket reservations, please call 773-655-1175 or visit www.chicagotaptheatre.com.
